Five Fashionating Trends from Fall 2016 RTW Fashion Shows

As a voyeur from afar – I waited with unrestrained excitement to get a glimpse of the looks revealed during Fall 2016 Fashion Weeks; Pray tell, I was not disappointed.
The 90s trend of turning our unmentionables into day wear is back. Take your cue from Diane von Furstenberg’s FW16 collection. By adding some booties, faux fur scarf and/or a blazer, one can create a realistic look that will take you from the bedroom to the board room.
There are two sides to every coin: Regardless if you are into the real deal or just faux-y, the statement fur trend continues to stand strong side-by-side. The Michael Kors Collection was no exception when he rocked the runway with a winter look that is a true juxtaposition: Big fur, flowery bow-front shirt with a tweed layering, and lots and lots of bare leg. “…It’s about the interesting mix,” Kors was quoted as saying backstage.
The bare shoulder trend – created by off-the-shoulder tops or small cut-outs – gives the world a sneak peek of our most feminine expanse of skin. Erin Fetherston (my unequivocally favorite collection this season) gets it right with a Prairie inspired dress baring just a little delicate shoulder. Ooh La La!
The white coat trend is the best way to add instant sophistication to any outfit. In addition, white is a non-color, and neutral shades are easy to pair with any ensemble. As with the Proenza Schouler FW16 collection, the full-length off-white coat amalgamated nicely with the stark white ribbon, black contrast piping, and the black buttons on an asymmetrical bias created a menagerie of textiles that worked. Très Chic!
Nothing cries feminine more than the color pink and this could be a hardest trend to wear. However, Gucci heralded the hue from head to toe on its models – pink fur and leather were the headliners with accompanying accessories as accouterments– it was hard to tell where the ensemble started or where it ended. Off the catwalk, I would avoid the ballerina look by erring on the side of a sophisticated silhouette or just add a pop of pink to be á la mode without the cherry on top.

Fanciful frocks with exaggerated embellishments such as
feathers, ruffles and meadows full of faux flowers seemed to float down runways;
Lace and fur vied with one another for attention and seemingly melded into one schizophrenic
mixed medium; and there was no shortage of Jacquard fabric that would make any
18th Century French royal proud.
However, my breath literally escaped me when I saw the images
from the Marchesa show. Flowing, ethereal
gowns that would be an impeccable choice for this Sunday’s Oscars awards in Los
Angeles; and don’t even get me started about the mini dresses adorned with
appliques and frills… absolutely fabulous for a movie premier.

But then I realized, it may be Ready-to-Wear (RTW) but wearable only in my high fashion fantasy life. Lucky for us everyday gals, I honed in on some trends from the shows that would translate perfectly into our typical day-to-day.
